Silent Genius: The Inspiring Journey of a Deaf and Dumb Defying Odds

Abhaya Chakraborty is in born deaf and dumb and brought up in a middle class family even educated upto class VIII with parent’s care. They are 2 brothers and 1 sister. Brothers are married, living separately with their families. After father’s expiry her mother is getting family pension and lives with Abhaya. Now her mother is old and unable to take responsibility of Abhaya. From childhood she likes to do many handicraft activities like wool knitting, needle works, doll making etc. She learnt bamboo craft work in a skill training program organized by CSWS at Gidhini.

When she was very much frustrated through neglect and torture by brothers at home she got a chance to be self dependent by joining in the handicraft production unit at CSWS, Markandachak in 2010. Since then she gradually learnt sabai craft, mat craft and recycle craft. She became expert in grass & yarn dyeing, yarn reeling, drumming, loom weaving, pattern making, cutting, stitching for product development, hand finishing etc.

Now she is the best artisan in new product development. Her production capacity in quality and quantity is praiseworthy. Now she meets all personal expenditures with average monthly income of Rs.9,000/- and even sends money from her earnings for her mother.

She is a true inspiration for many other women artisans. SFURTI project has given a new light of hope to her life, who was in great crisis. She is very eager to continue this work in future. Though she is physically challenged, through her hard work and mental strength, she has proven that if there is a will, there is a way.

Crafting Hope: The Resilient Journey of a Poor Rising Above Adversity

Sabita Barman lives in a remote village of Sabang block in Paschim Medinipur District of West Bengal with her husband and other family members. She got married at a very early age against her will because of the poor financial condition of her family. She studied up to class VIII and could not continue study anymore after marriage.

She used to do all the household work and took care of 1 son and 1 daughter along with other family members. In 2021 she trained up on product development of mat craft under the SFURTI project. After training she started earning through craft production. Initially family members did not support. But gradually they convinced and started helping. Even her son, daughter and husband have learnt mat sheet cutting & stitching, finishing etc. from her and assist during bulk production.

From Poverty to Pride: The Story of an Artisan's Ascension

Usha Rani Midya is a house wife of a poor farmer family living with one son, one daughter and husband in her family. She was a traditional mat weaver used to earn maximum Rs.1,000/- per month. She has been trained in diversified mat weaving from CSWS in 2005. After that started production at home taking loom and necessary raw materials from CSWS. Not only she trained up her family members but also other neighboring women in the villages those are presently associated with regular production.

In skill training programs under SFURTI Project she was engaged as Master trainer, attended exhibitions in Durgapur & New Delhi, various workshops, exposure visit to Mayurbhanj, Odisha etc. Her efficiency in design development under the guidance of reputed designers is excellent. May be she is poor in formal education but intelligent in craft works. During COVID, all artisans were in crisis due to raw material sourcing and marketing problems but financial and non-financial supports of CSWS helped her to overcome all odds.

She is now earning about Rs.9,000/- per month and happily living with grand children. Starting life in a backward family, struggling with social & cultural stigma she is ever smiling and has become decision maker in family & Medini Handicrafts Cooperative Society (SPV) and beloved & respected person in the community.
